TALES From The Bazaar
Tales from the Middle East have always fascinated me. Now, after visiting Turkey in 2010, I am enamored even more with the people who dwell along the Silk Road and beyond.
We found hospitality there that was genuine and exuberant. When our daughter Julia spoke in Turkish to our hosts they loved us even more. Our Turkish exchange student, Mert, taught me tales from that land and revealed to us more of the lighthearted impish spirit of his countrymen. That spirit shows up so well in the stories of Nasrudin Hodja, of Karagoz and Hacivat, and so many others.
At the height of the Ottoman Empire, these tales travelled back and forth to Morocco and all across North Africa through the Middle East toward India. Even though the sources of the tales are exotic, we northerners can gain insight into ourselves through their exploration of the human spirit.
Check your calendars and save the evening of Thursday, November 17th 6:30 p.m. to visit the Sultan’s Tent Restaurant for a sumptuous Moroccan feast interspersed with TALES from the Bazaar offered to you by storytellers Cassy Welburn and yours truly Karen Gummo.
